The Power of Networking
One of the most powerful skills a job seeker should possess is the ability to network. Career experts—and many successful job hunters—know how invaluable networking is because systematically making contact with knowledgeable businesspeople (or professionals in your desired field) is an excellent way to find out about job opportunities—and the right persons to call upon.
If you haven’t yet mastered the art of networking, below are some tips to help you take advantage of this indispensable skill:
- Go beyond your comfort zone.
It’s no secret: Most of us feel uncomfortable going up to someone they don’t—or barely—know and getting better acquainted? So how do the networking pros do it? Practice, practice, practice. Like most things in life, we tend to go through an awkward beginner’s stage when trying something new. The key is stick with it and then start to enjoy the benefits. Think about it: What have you really got to lose, right?
- Rehearse your “Elevator Pitch.”
As you will read about in another article in this issue, it’s essential to rehearse on your own—or with a friend—how to briefly and effectively present yourself and your credentials so that you leave the best possible impression on those with people with whom you’re hoping to network.
- Be a host, not a guest.
When you’re a host, you go around a group greeting other people in the room. Compare that to the guests who hold back and wait for someone to walk up to them and strike up a conversation.
- Listen and ask questions.
At the appropriate moment, give your elevator pitch, but also be sure you also ask plenty of questions, listen, and engage your potential networking contact. Also, don’t forget to ask for a business card and the opportunity to call your new contact.
