Farmland Information Center Protection Policy Research Intern

Deadline: May 14, 2021

Academic level: Graduate
Pay: $20.00 per hour
Dates: May 31st to July 30th or August 6th
Work hours: 15 hours per week. We can be flexible to accommodate the intern’s academic schedule but would prefer some availability on Wednesdays.
Location: Remote
Supervisor: Laura Barley and Kayla Donovan

Scope: Conducting research and collecting resources for the Farmland Information Center, relating to state and local farmland protection programs, laws, and policies, as well as identifying, tracking, and reporting on farmland protection programs and conducting surveys and monitoring the activity of established farmland protection programs, including programs that buy agricultural conservation easements to protect agricultural land.

New England Policy Intern

Scope: Researching best policy practices as relates to farmland access for farmland protection, smart solar sitting on farmland, soil health legislation, farmland access, and/or other relevant topic areas that are linked to AFT’s mission. Drafting 10 one-pager policy briefs. Assisting in planning the Working Lands Alliance Steering Committee summer retreat. Drafting blog content for NE newsletter as relates to regional policy work, and visiting NE farms, etc.

MW Program Coordinator / Data Technician Intern

Location: Remote/Preference for the intern to be located in Midwest, possibly Illinois

Scope: Provide coordination across diverse groups of partners and programs, focusing on multiple projects including The Saving Tomorrow’s Agriculture Resources (S.T.A.R.)  initiative, the Illinois Sustainable Ag Partnership (ISAP), the Fall Covers for Spring Savings (FCSS) Program, and several local watershed partnerships. Primary duties include supporting program growth and development, managing communications and partner relations, scheduling and facilitating meetings and events, and analyzing programmatic data.

Scope: Assisting with various outreach and education activities for the NY Programs region, ranging from, planning, curating, and tracking social media content, developing virtual classrooms, developing systems for organizing photos and other visual assets for ease of use across staff, to drafting updates, blogs, and other communications materials, and more.

Commercial Rye Cover Crop Intern

Work hours: 20 hours per week, flexible scheduling to accommodate academic calendar
Location: Remote/Preference for an intern in the Louisville, KY area, possibly from the University of Louisville.
Supervisor: Scott Franklin

Scope: Managing projects, organizing, and synthesizing research, coordinating the successful implementation of Kentucky Commercial Rye Cover Crop initiatives, working with farmers, academic researchers, and various stakeholders to provide administrative support, drafting monthly updates, blog posts, and written outreach materials, contributing to initiative analyses, research, and discussions of strategy, coordinating stakeholder meetings, farm visits, and other events as needed.

Climate Research Intern

Work hours: 30-37.5 hours per week. We can be flexible to accommodate the intern’s academic schedule.
Location: Remote
Supervisor: Mitch Hunter

Scope: Assisting on projects related to climate adaptation and mitigation in agriculture and/or environmental justice issues associated with future urban development and climate change, ranging from analyzing changing erosion risk using projected future agricultural land cover to advising on how to address these environmental justice questions in AFT geospatial analysis and reports.
