Position Summary

AGDAILY is hosting an intern to work closely with Managing Editor Ryan Tipps and other agricultural stakeholders to dive more deeply into diversity topics in our industry. It will be part of our Amplifying Diversity in Agriculture project.

AGDAILY.com, one of the farm and food industries’ largest and most versatile digita publications, wants to amplify diversity in agriculture. Discussing race and minority issues is never easy, but addressing our industry’s most gut-wrenching, complex, and timely issues has long been central to AGDAILY’s identity.

For the 2022 calendar year, through a partnership with American Farmland Trust, AGDAILY is hosting an intern to work closely with Managing Editor Ryan Tipps and other agricultural stakeholders to dive more deeply into diversity topics in our industry. It will be part of our Amplifying Diversity in Agriculture project.

The intern communicator will source, research, craft, and publish content that matters to today’s farmers and helps to share the perspective of those who are marginalized in this industry. The candidate should have good news judgment and should be able to work independently to cover these issues in a timely and effective manner.

AGDAILY is looking for a writer who can write interesting, informative, and accurate articles — some with a quick turnaround and others through longer-form research and reporting, as the subject matter dictates. The ideal candidate should be able to conduct interviews with sources, identify story angles, and pitch timely feature stories and other creative ideas to bolster their
coverage of minority and diversity issues.

This is a job for someone who loves farming and food — but most of all appreciates and respects the people who make up those communities. Agriculture is an innovative and forward- looking industry, and our communications intern needs to have a fascination and curiosity for many aspects of modern agriculture. Plus, the intern will have the opportunity to interact with
American Farmland Trust staff to learn about issues important to farmland protection, regenerative agricultural practices, and next-generation farmers. Farmers are on the go — a lot — and versatility is important to staying on top of the industry’s
most timely issues. As a digital-only publication, being nimble is part of who we are.

The internship is paid contractor, and workload will vary based on the time of year and intern’s academic schedule. The hire will work remotely and may travel a few times a year to agricultural shows, conventions, and events.

Deadline to apply is December 31, 2021.

Responsibilities
  •  Generate original content pieces on relevant agricultural and diversity lifestyle topics throughout the 2022 calendar year including breaking news items, feature stories, and content from social media, all per the direction of the Managing Editor. While diversity topics will be the focus, other content may occasionally be sought to broaden the intern's experience and help them grow as a writer and content creator.
  •  Work with stakeholders to bolster AGDAILY’s diversity coverage.
  • Maintain acceptable digital content publishing standards, including but not limited to headline and title copy, photos, videos, infographics, and data visualizations, sourcing, and citations, SEO best practices, and on-site discovery methodology.
  • Potentially travel to a limited number of agricultural shows and events, for both breaking news and ongoing coverage.
  • Contribute to AGDAILY’s dynamic social media channels.
  • Help to come up with ideas for timely original stories, topics, and research to report to the Managing Editor.

Qualifications
  • Consistent and professional editorial ability following the company’s editorial standards.
  • Strong communication skills — a creative writer, with an exceptional attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with minority and diversity topics, needs, and goals, specific to the agricultural and food industries.
  • Experience in a digitally savvy content role in the agricultural industry or similar category preferred.
  • Ability to write social-media-friendly and SEO-friendly content.
  • A deep knowledge and passion for agriculture and many aspects of rural lifestyle.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Familiarity with WordPress CMS preferred.
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics preferred.
  • A degree path in agriculture, communications, English, or a related field, or some
    college publication experience.
