Position Title: 

Assistant/Associate Professor in Forest Genetics / Co-Director of the Cooperative Tree Improvement Program

 

Position Summary:
The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University invites applications for a 12-month, tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor in Forest Genetics / Tree
Improvement who will also serve as Co-Director of the Cooperative Tree Improvement Program (TIP).
 
Leadership of the Cooperative as Co-Director will comprise 30% of the total primary responsibility of this position, and will provide a supplement to the 12-month base salary. We are seeking a motivated, innovative scientist with a vision for leading TIP into the future.
 
Duties include:
  • co-directing and maintaining a robust Cooperative Tree Improvement Program (30%)
  • developing a strong, externally funded research program in forest genetics (35%)
  • advising and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses (25%)
  • and service to the department and university (10%).
 
The co-directors have responsibility for the overall strategic direction of the Cooperative, including budget and personnel planning/oversight to maintain the core tree breeding program. Co-directors share administrative responsibilities, along with input and support from all TIP faculty and staff for research and extension activities (6 full-time team members). Co-directors are also required to consult with the executive committee of TIP members to establish, review, and update governance structure and allocation of responsibilities. Collaboration with other scientists associated with TIP and other faculty within the Department is expected. Outreach and extension to TIP constituencies (workshops, field visits, and guidance concerning tree improvement) is a critical function of this position. Extensive travel in the southern US, and occasionally internationally, is required.
 
 
Minimum education and experience:
doctoral or equivalent degree
 
 
Required skills:
● Evidence of ability to manage and/or coordinate a breeding program.
● Evidence of being a self-starter who is capable of independent planning and implementation of teaching, research, extension, and management of the tree breeding program, including data analysis, laboratory, greenhouse, and field activities.
● Demonstrated excellent communication skills for working with a wide range of individuals and organizations including students, faculty, forest landowners, consultants, forest industry, other forest industry cooperatives and public agencies.
● Experience with scientific publications and external funding from competitive and non-competitive sources on topics relevant to critical issues for breeding and forest genetics.
● Demonstrated ability in outreach, technical assistance, and collaboration with diverse stakeholders from TIP constituencies.
● Evidence of ability to collaborate and lead consensus-based decision-making.
● Evidence of ability and interest in teaching, mentoring, and involving students in research and operations.
 
 
Preferred qualifications:
● Experience in personnel supervision and team development.
● Ability to supervise and assist in professional development of team members.
