Position description:
The Division of Extension and Engagement and the College of Agricultural Sciences invite applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Assistant Professor of Practice position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Regional Director, Program Leader, and Department Head.

This Extension Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Assistant Professor (Practice) position will be located at the Southern Oregon Research Center (SOREC) in Central Point, Oregon. The academic home for this Extension Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Assistant Professor (Practice) position will be the Department of Crop and Soil Science or the Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU) depending on expertise of candidate. The academic home must be designated within six (6) months of the start date. Reappointments are at the discretion of the Regional Director, Department Head, and Program Leader.

The position focuses on general agricultural and horticultural based production systems with an emphasis on sustainable/biological methods appropriate for all agricultural producers. In addition, incumbent is expected to become knowledgeable of local, state and federal land use and agricultural regulations and to conduct educational programming for agriculture producers on these matters.

This faculty member independently develops and conducts educational programs and contributes to applied field research activities in Jackson and Josephine counties. The individual will work collaboratively with local producers, agriculture and natural resource agencies, and OSU faculty to plan, organize, deliver, and evaluate educational programs. In addition, the faculty member will provide farm-related problem-solving services. This position is specifically intended to support agricultural extension education needs in a manner that allows SOREC experiment station faculty members to focus on their research missions.

minimum qualifications:
    • Master’s degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Education, Natural Resources, Soils, Crops, Animal Science, Horticulture or closely related field. Degree must be completed by start date.
    • A basic working knowledge of conducting applied field research.
    • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion.
    • Demonstrated teaching, written and oral communication skills including the effective use of electronic (traditional and web-based) and printed mass media.
    • Must have or be able to obtain an Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License within six months of employment and maintain it throughout employment.
    • Ability to gather, interpret and communicate clearly and effectively broad-based scientific information with community and industry stakeholders.
    • Ability to lead groups, create partnerships, and to plan, organize, evaluate, manage, and delegate details associated with program management.
    • General ability to use common computers, including proficiency with information technology, web sites and social media.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

preffered Qualifications:
  • PhD in Agriculture, Agricultural Education, Natural Resources, Soils, Crops, Animal Science, Horticulture or closely related field.
  • Practical on-farm experience.
  • Teaching (classroom and programmatic) and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience understanding the role of program advisory committees.
  • Demonstrated life experience, education, and/or training that broaden capacity to equalize the success or impact on underserved audiences.
  • Course work, training, or experience with experimental design or basic statistical methods appropriate for applied field research.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate multiple cultural perspectives in educational design and delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure external funding support for educational and research programs.
  • Ability or ability to create equitable learning environments for both large and small farms and communities.
  • Ability to adapt to the changing technological environment.
