Join us as the Urban Forestry (UF) Community Stewardship Supervisor, where you'll play a pivotal role growing Portland’s tree canopy. In this dynamic leadership position, you will spearhead UF's Community Stewardship program, overseeing a team of passionate individuals dedicated to engaging diverse communities in urban tree planting and care. Together the team manages outreach, volunteer, and community education programs. The team’s work includes signing up residents for thousands of free trees, volunteer events to plant and care for trees, a summer Youth Conservation Crew, Arbor Day, and more.

Historic investment in urban tree planting and protection is poised to make a transformative impact in Portland by growing shade and reducing heat in communities where trees are needed the most. We are seeking a supervisor who is deeply committed to ensuring that underserved communities are at the heart of our tree planting, care, and outreach initiatives. In this exciting role you will work in both the office and field. You will also spend significant time working with partners in the community.

what you'll get to do:
Program Oversight
  • Design and lead a comprehensive plan for community outreach, education, and engagement that places equity and environmental justice at its core through trees.
  • Establish, track, and report on program and partner goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Oversee volunteer and education programs, implementation of best practices for volunteer training and safety, and tracking of hours and demographics.
Supervision
  • Train, coach, and supervise a team of four permanent employees and multiple seasonal staff.
  • Ensure that outreach, education, and stewardship work for youth and adults adheres to arboricultural best practices, promoting safety, equity, and excellence.
  • Provide leadership that fosters collaboration, inclusion, and equity.
 Partnerships and Contracts
  • Recruit, develop, and maintain relationships with community organizations.
  • Manage contracted partnerships for tree outreach and education, especially for the Portland Clean Energy Fund Equitable Tree Canopy program.
  • Collaborate with partners and contractors to drive tree planting sign-ups, aiming to meet ambitious goals of planting 10,000 trees each year.
  • Lead partnership efforts with active listening, empathy, and creative problem-solving.
  • Guide staff in providing contractor support for outreach and education contracts.
 Communication
  • Lead the team’s communication and messaging through website, social media, digital, and print communication.
  • Keep stakeholders informed with transparent communication on program status and progress.
  • Present, facilitate, and speak at meetings and community events.
required qualifications:

• Experience working in equity and/or environmental justice initiatives.
• Experience supervising and leading a team, such as hiring, training, and managing performance.
• Experience with engagement, volunteer management, professional organizing, and/or advocacy in urban forestry or a related environmental sector.
• Experience managing partnerships with diverse community organizations.
• Experience managing projects including developing work plans, implementation, and evaluating outcomes.
