Assistant Professor of Sustainable Horticulture
Job Description
The Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture announces an academic year, tenure track assistant professor position in sustainable horticulture. The successful candidate will develop an integrated teaching and research program. In teaching, the candidate is expected to develop an outstanding program involving hands-on and on-farm undergraduate education in small farm sustainability. Experience with active- and experiential-learning techniques is expected. The candidate will play a key role in the development of the department’s undergraduate degree programs, particularly the Sustainable Food and Farming Systems (SFS) program. Participation in graduate teaching and mentoring is also expected. In research, the candidate will develop a nationally recognized program that addresses the environmental, social, and/or economic sustainability of horticultural systems. Suitable systems for study might include community-based systems, low-input systems, urban agriculture, controlled environment agriculture, new crops development, or similarthe possibilities are broad. Research approaches might include agroecology, ecophysiology, or broader systems-level investigations. We expect the candidate to provide evidence of the capacity and motivation to integrate issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion into their teaching and research, and to engage these issues in the workplace and the agricultural workforce.

Qualifications
A Ph.D. in horticulture, sustainable agriculture, or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment. The candidate will have a demonstrated ability to engage undergraduate students in diverse learning environments and to conduct and publish independent research. The candidate will have strong teamwork and leadership skills, the ability to work within multidisciplinary teams, outstanding oral and written communication skills, and the ability to develop a well-funded and productive program in their specialty. Evidence of training and accomplishments in diversity, equity, and inclusion in previous roles is preferred. The ability to communicate with farmers and other stakeholders is desirable, as are practical crop production skills.
