The NC Applied Coastal Scientist is the leader of the Conservancy’s coastal science work across North Carolina’s nearshore, estuarine, and outer Coastal Plain regions.  They develop conservation priorities and long-term conservation strategies, provide scientific and technical capacity, and build key partnerships with public and private organizations.  They identify and advance understanding of complex coastal issues, and widely communicate findings, solutions, and best practices both internally and externally.  They develop innovative scientific analyses, tools, and frameworks to address natural system needs, increasing resilience of coastal areas, and restoring function of ecological systems. They conduct analyses to guide TNC’s protection and restoration work that will improve coastal resilience, accelerate climate adaptation, and improve natural habitats important for biodiversity.  They advance understanding of and develop strategies to assist siting and reduce impacts from offshore energy development.

what you'll bring:

•    Master's Degree and 2 years’ experience in coastal/marine science, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
•    Experience with North Carolina coastal, ocean, estuary, and wetland ecology
•    Experience managing staff, project, workloads and finances under deadlines.                                      
•    Experience with field data collection and techniques, data analysis, synthesis interpreting and communicating scientific information.         
•    Record of writing reports or peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
•    Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
•    Experience with spatial analysis and basic statistics.
•    Experience with grant writing and securing project funding. 
•    Experience with strategic planning.


responsibilities:

You’ll possess strong communication and project management skills to advance ecological understanding and enable more on-the-ground conservation.  You’ll also maintain and develop key partnerships and collaborations in applied science and policy with academia/research, government agencies, other conservation organizations, and the local community.  You’ll assist, and at times lead, Chapter staff and leadership to secure funds to support science needs, effective policies, as well as on-the-ground conservation and restoration projects.
