USDA-ARS: Research Microbiologist/Geneticist/Animal Scientist
Position description and responsibilities:

The Cell Wall Biology and Utilization Research Unit (CWBURU) in Madison WI is seeking a Research Animal Microbiologist/Animal Scientist. The mission is to provide solutions to the dairy industry for food security, environmental sustainability, and economic viability. The focus will include basic physiological and/or immunological factors influencing animal and rumen development, including host-microbiome interactions, that support enhanced productivity and longevity of dairy cows through improved developmental nutrition and health and to address key knowledge gaps in understanding the interplay of early life microbial, physiological, environmental, and immunological factors in developing dairy heifers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Characterize transcriptome and rumen microbial community changes in Holstein and/or Jersey heifers during development in pasture-based and/or controlled environments and in response to dietary changes. Evaluate the relationships and interactions between rumen microbiome development in the heifer and diverse genetic, environmental and management factors. Examine associations with increases in nutrient use efficiency, milk yield, and health challenges observed in their primiparous and multiparous lactation cycles. Utilize methods of next-generation DNA sequencing, transcriptomics, and other molecular genetic approaches in combination with bioinformatics, multivariate statistical analysis, and network analysis tools. Identify associations between gene expression and microbial community changes with nutrient use efficiency, milk yield, and animal health.

REQUIREMENTS:

U.S. Citizenship is required.
Applications must be received by the closing date of 04/12/2024.
