Position Title:
Food Safety Extension Educators

Position Summary
As part of MSU Extension (MSUE) and the Health and Nutrition Institute (HNI),
there are two Extension Educator positions available that will provide expertise in food safety. These positions will be responsible for in-person programming within the assigned district, will have statewide responsibilities, and will collaborate across work teams, Institutes, and community groups for advancement of clientele needs.

Food safety programming encourages residents to use safe food practices to reduce the risk of foodborne illness by teaching foodservice managers, workers, childcare providers, and consumers about safe food practices. In this position, you will identify, design, implement, and evaluate educational programs related to food safety. You will prepare and present both in-person and virtual trainings for the public at the state, regional, and national levels.

You will educate consumers on home food preservation methods, and help create safer food handling practices at food pantries and farmers markets. Through your expertise, you will implement educational programs such as Food Preservation, ServSafe, Cottage Food Law, Safe Food = Healthy Kids, Food Pantry Food Safety, Cooking for Crowds, and more.

Through collaboration in research, engagement with the community, and
dissemination of research through various methods, including in-person and
multimedia programming and written communications, you will implement
programs that lead to public knowledge and behaviors that help youth and
adults learn how to reduce their risk of illness when preparing food and to
preserve food safely. You will also develop, produce, and deliver outreach with
content that is accessible and inclusive and is consistent with HNI messaging.
Although negotiable, there will be space available for one position to work from
an MSUE County office located within MSUE’s district 8 that includes:
Montcalm, Gratiot, Ionia, Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham Counties, or can be
campus-based, in East Lansing, Michigan.

The other position, also negotiable, will have space available to work from an MSUE County office located within MSUE’s district 9 that includes: Midland, Bay, Saginaw, Shiawassee, and Genesee Counties.

While there is an expectation to work from a county office, these positions may be eligible to utilize a flexible work environment. Candidates can indicate their preference for position location within their cover letter.
