Position Summary
The Department of Forestry at Michigan State University invites applications for a full-time, Research Project Coordinator who will coordinate research and community engagement activities in a Detroit-based urban forestry study. This position will support a project co-led by Michigan State University Forestry Department and the USDA Forest Service and supported through an US Environmental Protection Agency Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant. This is an end-dated, grant-funded, benefits-eligible, non-union position, with funding for one year from date of hire, with extension possible depending on continued funding availability.
The successful candidate will facilitate data collection through identifying and cataloging existing datasets that are pertinent to the current study, aid in the development of methods and standards used during field and laboratory-based data collection processes, instrument and maintain research sites, aid in the processing and analysis of data collected from the laboratory and field and in disseminating findings from the research, facilitate community engagement activities, identify key community partners with which to collaborate in ongoing research initiatives, develop and implement innovative strategies for maintaining collaborations with community partners, facilitate periodic meetings within which the research team and community collaborators are able to provide project updates, create and maintain records of collaborative meetings with community partners, provide guidance to students and interns, and lead key initiatives and efforts as needed.
 
 
Required Qualifications:
  • Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through completion of one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in the specific field of research employment
  • one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research methodologies, writing reports, supervision, software, data interpretation and handling in area related to research being performed
  • or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position requires knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations and the ability to use email and the Internet.
 
Unit-specific Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in forestry, natural resources, environmental sciences, or related field
  • greenhouse or nursery management experience
  • previous project coordinator experience
  • record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • excellent organizational and project management skills
  • good interpersonal and communication skills
  • and proven commitment to completing work in a timely manner with a high level of professionalism.
 
Location: Position is based at MSU in East Lansing, MI. Most of the field work will be performed in Detroit, Michigan. Some work is remote friendly.
