Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science Seeks Climate Change Specialist

Position Title 

Climate Change Specialist focused on Adaptation and Carbon in Midwest ecosystems (1yr term/remotely located)
Position Summary
The Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS) and Michigan Technological University are advertising a Climate Change Outreach Specialist position (Research Scientist I), based remotely, for a term of 12 months. This position would join the NIACS Climate Change Response Framework (https://forestadaptation.org/) team with a special focus on synthesizing information and communicating how a changing climate may affect terrestrial ecosystems and land management in the Midwest region of the U.S. This position will review and synthesize literature to describe potential land management responses that may reduce climate risks while helping systems adapt to a changing climate. The position will work collaboratively with the NIACS team to create science-based information products, provide training, and technical assistance to natural resource managers working across a variety of regional ecosystems, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands.
The Climate Change Response Framework is a collaborative, cross-boundary approach among scientists, managers, and landowners to incorporate climate change considerations into natural resource management. The Climate Change Specialist will join the Climate Change Response Framework and collaborate with research and management partners on climate adaptation an carbon-focused natural resources management projects work effectively with scientists and natural resource managers to synthesize research information, assess climate-related risks, and translate results into non-technical language for a variety of audiences. This position will create science delivery products and provide training to professional audiences, including outreach through print- and web-based media, presentations, workshops, briefings, brochures, and other activities.
The position allows for remote work outside of Houghton, MI. However, applicants located in the Upper Midwest region are desired (MN, WI, MI) as this position may require travel (up to 10% of time) to locations in the Upper Midwest region.
This position will be hired through Michigan Technological University, classified as a “Research Scientist I”.
