Business/Function/Role Overview

FMC Ventures is the venture capital arm of FMC Corporation.  Our mission is to back emerging technologies that can create strategic advantages for FMC. In pursuit of this mission, we are evaluating breakthroughs in several domains including genomics, robotics, deep learning, digital, agFinTech, and synthetic biology among others. We are interested in the opportunities that emerge from the convergence of several disciplines. Purpose of this role is to assist in evaluating promising opportunities and help make good investment decisions via analysis and debate. This includes

  • Conduct technical due-diligence on potential investment opportunities.
  • Develop investment thesis for select opportunities and opportunity spaces via debate and analysis with key stakeholders and members of the Investment Committee.
  • Solicit feedback to support development of investment thesis from internal (R&D, Commercial, Precision Ag, Marketing, etc.) and external (academics, investors,founders, etc. ) subject matter experts and resources
  • Support and lead presentation of select investment cases to the Investment Committee
  • Support and lead negotiation of term sheets for select approved investments
  • Coordinate with internal and external counsel to support diligence and review of shareholder and related investment agreements
  • Directly manage a portfolio of investments, and assist in overall portfolio management including internal reporting
  • Liase with members of the FMC Operating Committee to provide support and advice to portfolio companies in the areas of product development, regulatory, IP, manufacturing and procurement
  • Generate new deal pipeline
  • Direct activities of Analyst / Associate supporting lead generation, investment thesis development, portfolio management and preparation of related materials to support internal and external discussion and presentation
  • Coordinate with FMC Communications to support content development for FMC website and social media outlets
  • Provide technical guidance in negotiating licensing and partnership deals.  
  • Serve as board observer or director for FMC portfolio companies
  • Represent FMC Ventures as a speaker / moderator at industry events  

Preferred  qualifications and preferred traits

  • Advanced graduate degree in  Biochemistry, Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Genetics, or related fields.
  • Five or more years of work experience in agriculture, preferably in ag-biotech.
  • Prior experience in evaluating or scouting emerging technologies.
  • A well-informed point of view about the emerging breakthroughs and the technologies mentioned above.
  • Write clearly and persuasively in simple prose free of jargon.
  • Financial modeling experience
  • Thrives in uncertain, fast-paced, ambiguous, and complex situations.
  • Sufficient task relevant maturity and judgement to make decisions with imperfect information.
  • Prior work experience in venture investments, private equity, and/or startup operations is preferred.
  • Experience working in a multi-national company is a plus
