Department of Entomology Chair
 
 
Position Summary:

The Department of Entomology at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications and nominations for Chair of the Department. The Chair is the chief administrative officer of the unit.

For more than 100 years, the University of Maryland Department of Entomology has been committed to excellence in research, teaching, and extension. Our faculty, students, and staff:
1) advance scientific knowledge through basic and applied research,

2) provide science
education in Entomology and broader areas of the biological sciences at the undergraduate,
graduate, and postgraduate levels, and

3) fulfill the land grant mission of the University of
Maryland to provide research-based information and solutions to serve Maryland communities.

While the unit maintains a historical focus on insects and their relatives, the academic interests of Department members span a diversity of subdisciplines, including molecular, evolutionary, and developmental biology, genetics and genomics, systematics, medical entomology, ecology, conservation and restoration biology, pollinator science and apiculture, integrated pest management, biological control, toxicology, and insect pathology. The breadth of ongoing research in Entomology offers opportunities for partnerships with governmental and non-profit organizations, and Department members collaborate extensively with NIH, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Smithsonian Institution, and other national, state, and local agencies.

 


Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a compelling vision for the future of the department.

  • Provide leadership in planning and supervising programs relevant to the department’s
    mission within the land grant university system, manage departmental budgets and other
    financial matters, and assist in generating extramural support for department activities.

  • Evaluate, counsel, and promote professional development of faculty, staff, and students.

  • Ensure recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty, staff, and students, while also fostering a diverse and inclusive working environment within the department.

  • Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, university administrators and
    stakeholders, including appropriately seeking and applying feedback.

 

Required Education:
  • Ph.D. in Entomology, Biology, or other Life Sciences-related field (e.g., subdisciplines above), with a level of experience that would enable them to serve as a tenured member of the College at the rank of Professor

 

Qualifications:
  • Outstanding records in research and education, along with  the administrative skills and vision to lead the unit.
