Description of Work Unit The Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology Department expands the frontiers of knowledge through our broad-based expertise in applied ecology, quantitative methods, and human dimensions in the conservation and management of fish and wildlife.  We teach students to think critically about environmental issues and become ecologically literate citizens with the training to be successful in graduate school and in careers with natural resources agencies, firms, and non-government organizations.  Our outreach efforts contribute significantly to life-long learning by assisting individuals and agencies to solve complex environmental problems and to be good stewards of our nation’s natural resources.

Position Summary This position is for an Assistant Professor focused on human-wildlife conflict and coexistence, with a 30% Extension appointment.

The Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology (http://warnercnr.colostate.edu/fwcb-home)  in the Warner College of Natural Resources (http://warnercnr.colostate.edu/) is one of the top-ranked  programs nationally, comprising over 600 undergraduates, 43 graduate students, and 27 academic faculty. Most faculty also participate in CSU’s nationally ranked Graduate Degree Program in Ecology (http://www.ecology.colostate.edu/). Located within CSU’s Office of Engagement, Extension (https://extension.colostate.edu/) encourages the application of research-based knowledge in response to local, state, and national issues affecting individuals, families, agricultural enterprises, and communities of Colorado. Extension fosters a direct connection between extension agents and on-campus and field-based subject matter specialists to meet the needs of Coloradans. 

In addition to CSU Extension and the diverse Centers housed within the Warner College of Natural Resources (e.g., Center for Human-Carnivore Coexistence, Center for Collaborative Conservation, Colorado Natural Heritage Program, Colorado Forest Restoration Institute, Center for Protected Area Management), there are opportunities to establish connections with a diverse group of local partners, including USGS Fort Collins Science Center, National Wildlife Research Center, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Required Job Qualifications
  1. Ph.D. in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Conservation Biology, or related field; 
  2. Record of scholarly publication in the field of human-wildlife conflict and coexistence and ability to secure external funding 
Preferred Job Qualifications
  1. Excellence in research in human-wildlife conflict and coexistence as evidenced by a strong record of research and publication; 
  2. Record of obtaining research funding from a diversity of sources; 
  3. Relevant and impactful teaching and student mentoring experience; 
  4. Experience working collaboratively across disciplines and with governmental agencies (e.g., state wildlife agencies, USDA), non-governmental organizations, and local communities to co-produce and apply science-based actionable knowledge; 
  5. Demonstrated commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusion in fish, wildlife, and conservation biology fields.
