Job Description
The Environment and Energy Department is seeking a Waste Reduction and Recycling Outreach
Specialist that will support program managers by assisting with waste management planning
and outreach to multifamily property managers and residents, businesses, schools, and residents
to encourage waste prevention, recycling, and organics recycling.
About the position type:
This is a limited-duration (temporary), benefit earning position up to two years.Location and hours:
This position will be performed primarily remote with occasional on-site work. When onsite, this position will be located in downtown Minneapolis at the 701 Building, 701 Fourth Ave S, Minneapolis, MN, 55415. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with occasional evening and weekend work for community events and meetings.
In this position, you will:
- Assist with the development of a county zero waste plan and the county’s solid waste management master plan.
- Coordinate and attend community engagement sessions.
- Assist property managers in establishing and enhancing waste prevention, recycling, and organics recycling programs at multifamily properties.
- Provide support for compliance efforts related to business recycling, multifamily recycling, and hauler requirements in Ordinance 13.
- Assist schools in establishing and enhancing waste prevention, recycling, and organics recycling programs.
- Support the Zero Waste Challenge program team and serve as a liaison to participating households.
Need to have:
- One of the following:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in environmental or social sciences, environmental education or communications, environmental management, public or business administration, or a field closely related to the assignment and six months or more of experience in community outreach or project/program coordination, or related field.
- Four and a half years of experience in community outreach or project/program coordination, or a related field.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
Nice to have:
- Understanding of environmental sustainability and waste reduction and recycling.
- Experience:
- Coordinating or assisting with the coordination of projects or programs
- Coordinating events, conducting site visits, and/or public speaking
- Effective verbal and written communication skills; comfortable making phone calls, conducting site visits, and public speaking.
- Self-motivation and the ability to show a commitment to performing high quality work and completing projects on schedule while dealing with diverse audiences.
- Skilled in writing and editing content for a public audience.
- Skilled in research, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Ability to:
- Work with people and organizations from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
