Position Summary 
Carries out research assignments for a large or multi-faceted research project. Performs independent research, experiments, and laboratory techniques. Responsible for the daily operation of a specialized laboratory within a department, and related data analysis for research projects.
 
Position Focus
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), will be responsible for managing the newly created Applied Wildlife Ecology Lab (AWE) at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE), performing sample preparation, analysis, and experiments to study wildlife ecology. The AWE Lab investigates antagonistic interactions in mammal systems including parasitism, competition, and predation namely in terrestrial carnivores. Ongoing and future projects include spatial variation in consumption through diet and stable isotope analysis from hair and feces; blood meal analysis from mosquito and ectoparasites; assessing microbial and parasite diversity; carnivore movement from radio-collars; and mammal monitoring via camera-trap surveys. This position will focus on daily operational management and oversight of the laboratory, personnel and data analysis for these research projects. Actively participate in the design and development of experiments and responsible for all regulatory aspects of the lab. Collaborate with the PI to develop long-range plans for supplies and equipment to ensure smooth operation of the laboratory.
 
 
  • Carries out research including sample processing within the scope of the study protocol. Prepares, extracts and analyzes data, and investigates and prepares preliminary scientific conclusions.
  • Manages written protocols and standard operating procedures for lab and field work
  • Participates in experimental design set up and oversees data collection and management
  • Oversees database management, method development, and quality control
  • Performs data analysis and presents data needed for reports, publications, and presentations
  • Curates collections and data associated with inventory of biological samples, image and videos from camera surveys, and radio-collar movement coordinates
  • Maintains and operates laboratory equipment, providing training, maintenance and troubleshooting problems with equipment.
  • Manages the procurement of lab supplies and field gear necessary for data collection and storage
  • Reviews permits and submits annual reports to appropriate agencies
  • Maintain compliance and train personnel on environmental and safety procedures
  • Stay abreast of current technology in the field to ensure the lab is operating with the most current technology
  • Ensures compliance with local and federal regulations and all safety regulations
  • Some travel required, both domestic and international

 

Principal Responsibilities
1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority.
2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning
3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly.
4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results.
Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports.
5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning.

6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory.
7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments.
8. May perform other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of
education and experience.


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience with camera and movement data strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of acquiring field collection and shipping permits
  • Previous experience managing laboratory operations and training others
  • Experience in experimental design
  • Strong analytical skill with experience in GIS, Python, Github, and R Knowledge of handling dry ice for shipping

 

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Experience with molecular and microscopy techniques strongly preferred related to
    biodiversity, disease/parasitology and diet analysis, including:
    DNA extraction (biological and/or environmental) and PCR and sequencing with metabarcoding, genotyping, and next-generation sequencing
  • Must be self-directed and demonstrate initiative, with strong organizational skills and ability to
    multitask and set priorities. Skilled in identifying and resolving problems
  • Experience maintaining and operating laboratory equipment, and ability to conduct and maintain laboratory research, datasets and workflow across projects. Field-based research experience a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills, with demonstrated experience managing data collection and management. Attention to detail and high degree of accuracy. Ability to work independently and oversee research protocols for others. Familiarity with grant proposals and progress reports.
  • Ability to interact well with and provide instruction and guidance to a diverse group of faculty, student and staff, including with diverse teams from different racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
