Position Overview

Oregon State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences is seeking a Director of Marketing and Communications. This position leads marketing and communication strategies for the college, and ensures that these efforts are directed toward achieving the strategic goals of the college and the university. The position reports directly to the Dean and operates as part of the college’s senior leadership team. This is a 12-month, full-time, professional faculty position based in Corvallis, Oregon. Responsibilities

40% Strategic Marketing and Communications Leadership
Develop, implement and create strategic marketing and communications plans and messages consistent with the strategies and values of the College and that are disseminated via various media to audiences including students, employees, stakeholders, collaborators, alumni and supporters, media and the public. Current outlets include Progress magazine, The Source newsletter, the College website, SMS messaging, email lists, social media accounts, and several targeted publications.
Work collaboratively with Deans, Directors, OSU Government Relations, and Extension and Forestry communicators to develop coordinated, strategic communications for the Statewide Public Service Programs (Agriculture Experiment Station, Extension Service, and Forest Research Lab). This will require travel and driving to various locations across the state of Oregon.
Collaborate with CAS’s student services team and OSU Foundation/OSU Alumni Association colleagues to support CAS goals and priorities related to student, alumni and donor engagement and stewardship.
Ensure created marketing and communications content and messaging is compliant with OSU brand guidelines and CAS sub-brand guidelines.
Ensure marketing and communication strategies, messaging, and content reflect and support OSU’s and CAS’s commitments to diversity, inclusion, and social justice as central to our mission.
Serve as brand manager. This includes collaborating with University Relations and Marketing to support, guide, and enforce brand management and serve as a trusted and accessible resource for CAS colleagues. Collaborate with URM on brand audit activities. Participate in the OSU communicators’ network, including attending meetings and trainings.
Assist the College with communicating contentious public issues. Crisis and public affairs communications are coordinated with the Vice President and Associate Vice President of University Relations and Marketing.
Coordinate and consult on CAS-related news and media relations efforts with Extension Communications and OSU’s News and Research Communications teams.
Manage the CAS website, CAS social media, and all digital communications.
Prepare executive communications for the Dean, including speeches, talking points and written content.


25% Executive editor
Serve as executive editor and project leader for “Progress,” the College’s award-winning magazine, published digitally and in print.
Lead creation and production of the magazine content and associated materials in multiple media for multiple purposes.


20% Marketing and Communications team leadership and management
Oversee daily work of Marketing and Communications team.
Supervise team members, including conducting annual performance reviews and improvement plans and supporting professional development.
Manage allocated personnel and operations budgets.
Oversee marketing plan for “Beaver Classic,” a brand of food products created by CAS students under the guidance of world-renowned experts in agricultural sciences.


10% Teaching
Teach 1 Agricultural Science and Natural Resource Communications (ASNRC) course annually in support of the ag communications curriculum in Agricultural Education/Agricultural Science. Course assignment will be made in consultation with the Department Head.


5% Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Master’s degree and three years of professional experience in managing communications and marketing functions.

Professional experience that provides strong evidence of ability to develop, implement and evaluate marketing and communication strategies in support of organizational goals or priorities.

Experience working effectively with colleagues across units and levels of an organization.

Experience managing personnel, budgets and projects/workflows.

Demonstrated ability to adapt to changes and advances in marketing and communication trends, tools and technologies.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position;therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university;therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
