A NEED FOR LEADERS IN THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY FIELD
OF PLANT DISEASE MANAGEMENT

Plant diseases are a major constraint to crop production, and cost the
global economy around $220 billion each year. They also pose a
threat to global food security and their impacts are expected to
worsen with global climate change. Managing plant diseases
sustainably is therefore essential to meet the food demands of our
planet’s growing population.

WHAT TRAINING WILL THE FELLOWS RECEIVE?

Students will receive academic foundations in plant disease diagnosis
and management and bioinformatics and data science through
courses and research thesis projects that address important disease
issues for stakeholders. They will learn transferable skills through
experiential learning opportunities for leadership, communication of
science to diverse audiences, mentorship, teaching, budgeting, and
organization. Students will visit farms and branch experiment stations
across the state of Oregon to observe diverse plant production
systems. And they will be pipelined into plant production careers
through networking, and close mentoring and guidance by both
academic and non-academic professionals. This educational program
will foster critical, creative, and innovative thinking, and will prepare
future leaders in plant production.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Students with passion and motivation for sciences, in particular plant
sciences. You must be citizens or nationals of the United States of
America, and have strong interest in preparing for a career as a
